January is the time to set goals, make resolutions, and change your life for the better.
I’ve never been on for new year’s resolutions though. After watching the success rate of others who tried this, it seemed better to me to make changes I could stick to throughout the year.
This year, January 1st would have found me with no big goals, no lofty plans, no resolutions. But this time it didn’t. All because of one YouTube video.
Sometime in December, I came across this youtuber who said that she plans out her entire year (which sounds about as crazy and impossible but it isn’t exactly what you think). One of the things she did was chose a word/ theme for the year. She’d pick a word like organized, focused, strong, or simplify and that would be her focus for the year.
While I was watching this, I thought, “Hmm…that would be a great thing to do on my blog.” I’ve always just wrote about topics as I felt like it. Most of the time I’d sit down to write with very little idea of what I was going to write about.
The last few months, I’ve gotten my topics from a book I was working through, Word Painting by Rebecca Mcclanahan (which I still need to finish.) That, by default, made my posts have a theme because they were all about descriptive writing. But if I actually set a theme for the year, it would keep me from the dreaded I-don’t-know-what-to-write-about feeling that happens every time I realize it’s almost Thursday and I have nothing planned.
Besides that, it sounded fun! 🙂
The word I picked for me personally is growth. I’ll be focusing on things that make me better as an individual. So, why not have the theme for Invisible World be the same?
This year I’ll be posting about how to grow as a writer. I’ll be talking about things like trying new genres, flash fiction, giving different tools (like Scrivener or For the Words) a try, sharing your writing, and other topics.
I’ll still be posting a short story or poem on the first Thursday of the month, a book review on the third Thursday, the other Thursdays writing tips, with Just Chatting post like this one scattered in randomly.
The grow-as-a-writer topics will go in one of the Thursdays I’m posting writing tips, and I’m only doing one of these a month so that way the other writing-tips post will be on descriptive writing (you all have to finish that word painting-book with me 😛 ).
So lets make 2019 the year we became awesome writers!
I’m open for suggestions. I’d love to know if there’s anything you want to discuss. What do you think learning more about would help you grow as a writer?
And if you want to watch that YouTube video that inspired this, here it is.
